    I was attending a reunion years ago in the 80's, and was at the bar with an old North American engineer that was on the XB-70 project. He got upset when I mentioned the airplane. He cursed Joe Walker, he said Joe was attempting a barrel roll around the XB-70 showing off in front of the cameras and hit the tails attempting to do so. Did he just have too much to drink? I have always wondered. But that's what he told me. He was probably in his 70's then, and I'm sure he's gone by now...

    Does anyone know where I can find all the progress reports? I'm so interested into the XB-70 and I'd love to watch them all.

    I just saw the remaining XB70 at the Air Force National Museum in Dayton Ohio. Crazy how large it is. Took two days to go thru the whole place. If you like planes, there’s over 350 they say.

    A tremendous accomplishment using late 1950s technology. Still far advanced over anything flying decades later. MacNamara and his Harvard boys should have stuck to building ugly little cars in Henry Ford’s big ugly factory

    A true technical achievement, even if it was outdated by then. I wonder what the manpower and hours would have been needed, if it did make it to service. Very Glad that it finally got a warm hut to sit inside. Many of the Chino CA Planes Of Fame Museum planes sat in the Cali sun for years and years, in it's own boneyard. They finally they went indoors and were spritz'd up a bit. Gotta save the History!!. That old tech might be new tech once again someday.

    amazing this technology of the XB-70 was envisioned in the Leave it to Beaver days of the late 50's, yet they could not yet put man on the moon or invent a smartphone

    • @winternow2242
      @winternow2242 Рік тому

      Actually it wasn't built until 1964, by which time, America had put astronauts in orbit, detonated the H-bomb, pioneered the transistor and were well on the way to putting a man on the moon. The only reason we accomplished any of those things is because what was accomplished back then.

    • @winternow2242
      @winternow2242 Рік тому

      Why? In 1964, the Soviets had air defense missiles and supersonic interceptors. They also had a significant capacity for nuclear retaliation. The B-70 bomber was a plane that even American leaders had doubts about.

    My Father was working swingshift at this plant as a sheet metal tech on the XB-70 and the testing of the engines in their test cells would shake our house and awaken everyone. We saw it on rollout with the other North American workers families but had no idea what he did at the plant until that day. Amazing aircraft.
